In 2009, Formula 1 was at a tipping point. Mostly forgotten now, but it was as close as the sport came to splitting in two in its history. The issues culminated at the 2009 British Grand Prix , where 8 of the teams, the Formula One Teams Association, put forth unofficial plans to breakaway and form their own racing series.
