On today’s video, we run down 10 players who became legends at their club before trying to leave – with some failing and some succeeding! Sergio Ramos has come close to leaving Real Madrid on a number of occasions, notably in 2015 when it looked like Man United would sign him, but so far it has always ended with him getting his desired contract at the Bernabeu. Luis Suarez tried to leave Liverpool in 2013, claiming the Premier League club had promised him a move, but was blocked from moving to Arsenal before getting his switch to Barcelona the following summer.

We also take a look at Steven Gerrard, who was inches away from betraying Liverpool for Chelsea and Jose Mourinho just weeks after winning the Champions League in 2005, and Alan Shearer, who was apparently close to joining the Reds from Newcastle two years earlier. Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo looked like leaving Man United years before they actually did, while Patrick Vieira threatened to leave Arsenal on a number of occasions. And then of course, there is Lionel Messi.
