Fukuoka, Japan, October 1, 2019 – Yuki Ishikawa sparked Japan with a match-high 19 points in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) victory over Italy at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup on Tuesday.

Japan coach Yuichi Nakagaichi: "We won the first match 3-0 with an excellent performance. This is pleasing to us. There are strong teams in this competition. We must execute. In the first set we disrupted their serve and were good on block-touch. Our side-out went well. We focused on quick pipe attacks. We lost points in the second set after long rallies. In the third set our service was not good."

Japan captain Masahiro Yanagida: "Our opponents were strong. We did our best in a great atmosphere. We want to keep the atmosphere in the coming matches."

Japan player Yuki Ishikawa: "It is good to start the World Cup with a 3-0 win over Italy. We won the third set despite losing momentum. It is a good sign for the coming matches to win like this."

Japan player Yuji Nishida: "It is nice to win 3-0 in a good way. I had some tough moments in the third set, but my teammates backed me up. I will have a chance to grow from this match."

Italy coach Gianlorenzo Blengini: "I’m not happy with the result. At the beginning it was difficult and we could not play good volleyball. This team is not together always. Some of the players joined only a few days ago. We want to get better and grow in this competition. We had chances in the first set but Japan defended better. My adjustments were not enough."

Italy captain Matteo Piano: "It is great to play against a good team. We did not have a good start. We could not stay close in the first and second sets. Our coach told us we have to increase our level in each and every set."
