Roman Reigns had finally gotten the coronation that was long overdue at Summerslam last year when he finally slayed The Beast to become the Universal Champion. Unfortunately, the former powerhouse of The Shield was not safe from the curse of the Universal Championship, as Reigns had to relinquish the red belt to go on an extended hiatus to battle his returning leukaemia. The announcement shook the WWE to its very core, as the company lost the biggest face in the promotion for an undisclosed amount of time. For better or worse, large amounts of WWE programming had become Reigns-centric over the last few years, so the announced left the company scrambling to find replacements.
