24h Le Mans Legend Porsche 911 GT1-98 & 1997 Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution, Flat-6 Twin-Turbo Engines

Two magnificent examples of Porsche 911 GT1s, the 1998 Le Mans winner and the 1997 Evoluzione model, took part in the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​(FOS) during the celebrations 70th anniversary of the famous German brand. With a front inspired by the 996 models, the EVO version adopts a wider front, a carbon fibre body with better downforce and more efficient electronic engine management. The engine is a liquid-cooled 3.2-litre Twin-Turbo Flat-6 capable of developing 600hp at 7,200 rpm and 630Nm of torque at 5,500 pm. The gearbox is a 6-speed sequential, rear-wheel drive, fully carbon-ceramic braking system and a total weight of only 1,050Kg. Unfortunately, in the 1997 24H of Le Mans, both the two cars lined up had to retire due to an accident and one due to mechanical failure.
The 1998 model is completely different from the previous year; detached from the now modified FIA rules, the GT1 cars no longer had an obligation to rely on production cars. A new 100 kg lighter carbon fibre frame was set up; a specific sequential gearbox was designed while the power of the twin-turbo engine due to the air restrictors was around 550hp. While not the most competitive model compared to the competition, it proved to be the most reliable at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which won in the number 26 car driven by Laurent Aïello, Allan McNish Stephane Ortelli.

Due magnifici esemplari di Porsche 911 GT1, la vincitrice di Le Mans del 1998 ed il modello Evoluzione del 1997 hanno partecipato al Goodwood Festival of Speed (FOS) nel 2018 durante i festeggiamenti per il 70th anniversario del famoso marchio tedesco. Con un frontale ispirato al modello 996 la versione EVO adotta una carreggiata allargata all'anteriore, una carrozzeria in fibra di carbonio con un migliore carico aerodinamico ed una più efficiente gestione elettronica del motore. Il propulsore è un 3.2-Litri Flat-6 raffreddato a liquido, Twin-Turbo capace di sviluppare 600 cv a 7.200giri/min e 630 Nm di coppia a 5.500 giri/min. Il cambio è sequenziale a 6 rapporti, trazione posteriore, impianto frenante completamente con dischi carbo-ceramici ed un peso complessivo di soli 1.050Kg. Purtroppo nella 24H di Le Mans del 1997 entrambe le due vetture schierate dovettero ritirarsi, una per incidente ed una per guasto meccanico.
Il modello del 1998 è completamente differente rispetto a quello dell'anno precedente, slegato dalle regole FIA ora modificate, le vetture GT1 non avevano più l'obbligo di essere basate su auto di produzione. Viene quindi allestito un nuovo telaio in fibra di carbonio più leggero di 100 Kg, fu progettato uno specifico cambio sequenziale mentre la potenza del motore twin-turbo per via dei restrittori da regolamento si assestò su circa 550cv. Nonostante non fosse il modello più competitivo rispetto alla concorrenza si rivelarò il più affidabile alla 24h di Le Mans che vinse con l'auto numero 26 pilotata da Laurent Aïello, Allan McNish e Stephane Ortelli.
