I had the pleasure of filming the Tyrrell 012, 1983 Formula One car [F1], chassis #02 on the Nürburgring track. This single-seater, driven by Martin Stretton takes part in the races of the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship. We are at the 2018 and 2019 editions of the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix. The 1983 Tyrrell with its Benetton livery was designed by Maurice Philippe and Brian Lisles and adopted a 3.0-litre Ford Cosworth DFY 90º V8 naturally aspirated engine combined with a 5-speed Hewland FGA manual transmission. The use of this engine was penalizing in terms of performance compared to rivals. At the time, turbocharged engines were used which were much more powerful. Tyrrell had around 530hp at 11,600 rpm. At that time the Turbo engines could safely develop 800-1000hp. The frame construction consists of an aluminium/carbon fibre monocoque. Total weight of the car about 540Kg. In the hands of the pilot Michele Alboreto, the car proved to be competitive anyway, the best result was a sixth place at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, in 1983.
