Russia, including the Soviet Union and CIS, have traditionally been a major force of volleyball since the very beginning of international competitions.
They joined the FIVB in 1948, a year after the foundation of the international governing body. The following year, they sent a team to compete in the first FIVB World Championship. They have been a dominant force on the international scene ever since, including six World Championship titles, and six World Cup and 14 European Championship golds.
They triumphed at the FIVB World Cup in 2011, and secured Olympic for the fourth time at the London 2012 Olympic Games – the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union. They failed to defend their title at Rio 2016, finishing in fourth place after the USA came back from 0-2 to win 3-2 in the bronze medal match.
Russia have participated in 26 editions of the FIVB World League, only missing the 2004 and 2005 competitions. They finished second in 1993, 1998 and 2000, before finally capturing their first of three gold medals in 2002 - defeating hosts Brazil 3-1 in the final in Belo Horizonte. After returning to the competition in 2006, they have consistently featured on the podium and have added two more gold medals. The first came in 2011, when they defeated Brazil 3-2 in the final in Gdansk, Poland, and the second in 2013, when they triumphed over the same opposition 3-0 in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
